Jean-Baptiste Mellerio founded the Mellerio jewelry company in the late 1700s, with Marie Antoinette as one of his first clients. His jewelry house went on to invent the first ‘acrostic jewelry’, which was commissioned by Napoleon for his beloved Josephine.
Acrostic jewelry uses the language of jewels to spell out secret messages, usually in rings or bracelets. D is for Diamond, E is for emerald… you get the point. The Victorians were enchanted by the jewel alphabet, and rings spelling ‘regard’, ‘dearest’ and ‘adore’ were the height of fashion while Victoria ruled. The language of jewels was slowly forgotten in the 20th century, but we’re bringing it back.
